Windscreen Replacement Toowoomba
It’s illegal to drive with a cracked or smashed windscreen for a few fairly obvious reasons.
They all relate to the safety of the driver and passengers in the car, as well as other cars on the road.
Of particular importance is the critical vision area, directly in line with your steering wheel with an average width of 300mm.
Cracks in this area can reflect light that can distract a driver, or startle them.
Also, a cracked windscreen is weaker than one that isn’t cracked, and is more likely to smash.
There are two types of replacement auto glass available, laminated or tempered.
Laminated Glass Windscreens are manufactured like a “sandwich” with glass on the outside and inside surfaces and a clear plastic film between. A laminated screen is more resistant to breakage than tempered glass and even when fractured it remains almost transparent.
Tempered Glass is specially treated so that, when broken, it shatters into tiny fragments instead of jagged splinters. Unfortunately, when the windscreen shatters, it is difficult to see through.
Laminated Glass Windscreens (1994 onwards)
Vehicles manufactured on or after 1 January 1994 must be fitted with laminated glass windscreens. Whilst vehicles built before 1 January 1994 do not have to meet this requirement, it is strongly recommended that when a replacement windscreen is needed, laminated glass be used.
Tempered Glass (before 1994)
Tempered glass is actually lighter and less costly than laminated glass. Tempered auto glass is single-ply, but it is treated by heating and then rapid cooling. In the event the glass breaks, it does not shatter into dangerous shards but rather into thousands of harmless pebble-like pieces that do not have sharp edges.
